Few surprises at CAT this year

Anjali Prayag

Bangalore , Nov. 19

The Common Admission Test (CAT) held today did away with all the surprises that were thrown in, in the last two years.

Differential marking was done away with, there were more choices per question, the quantitative analysis section was far easier, but verbal ability, more tricky.

Walkover for IITians

Students here felt that while it was a walkover for IITians and engineers, other graduates too could expect a score of 150 plus in the qualifying exam for an entry into premier business schools.

Mr Kaushal Sharma, Course Director (CAT), Triumphant Institute of Management Education (TIME), said: "The difficulty level was average, but I was surprised to see some errors in the answer choices. For some series, none of the choices were the right answers."

TIME trained

About 45,000 students trained by TIME took the exam today across the country.

Though the paper was apparently easy, Mr Sharma expects a score of 100 (out of 300) to get an IIM call.

"It was obvious that this year's exam did away with the time pressure," said Mr Dipankar Choudhury, Head, Career Plan.

This could be an indication that the IIMs could be looking at strong conceptual skills, he added.

Easy for engineers

Quantitative analysis was the surprise. While it was very easy for engineers, it could have posed some problems for the others.

"I won't be surprised if some engineers score full marks in QA."

But like every year, students are unsure about the outcome.

"It's not as if they are relieved that this was a relatively easier paper. They are not sure what they are being tested for," said Mr Choudhury.
