Hyderabad , Nov. 19

Andhra Pradesh has asked the Union Government to come out with a national policy on bio fuels. It also wants the Government to announce tax sops in order to encourage bio diesel plantations. Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, AP Minister for Agriculture and Civil Supplies, would make a presentation before the Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas in New Delhi on Monday.

The meeting would discuss strategies for development of alternative fuels. The Minister would list various measures taken by the State Government to promote bio diesel plantation and produce bio ethanol. "We have given permission for setting up four ethanol units. We are encouraging production of ethanol through maize," a Ministry spokesperson said.

In this regard, the State would ask the Centre to increase the minimum support price for maize. It would also suggest that the ethanol blend norm should be increased to 10 per cent from the 5 per cent.

The State Government had included bio diesel plantation in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The Minister would also speak on the upcoming agreement between the State Oil Federation and the farmers with regard to purchase of jatropha/pongamia seeds.
