`Focus on farmers' capacity building in trading'

Coimbatore , Nov. 21

Capacity building of the domestic farming sector should precede any dialogue involving India's agriculture related trade under the Doha round/World Trade Organisation because of the heavy odds faced by the small farmers in market place, according to Mr C. Vaiyapuri, President of the United Farmers Association of Tamil Nadu.

In a communication addressed to the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Delhi, which has convened a meeting this week to deliberate on `Indo-US agriculture trade and the Doha Round: Reaping benefits of partnership', he has pointed out that the Indian farming community has held out for ages the tradition and heritage in rendering the country's food security and jobs for the rural poor.

Still a vast section of the farmers faced hurdles in the form of price discrepancies for their produce, lack of access to rationalised farm marketing which effectively kept a bulk of the farming community away from making any significant gains from the market even within the country.

In the backdrop of these challenges, India may take its own time and preparation before it can forge decisions on the farm negotiations under the Doha round, said Mr Vaiyapuri.
