Chennai, Nov. 22

The Tamil Nadu Government will take steps to enable the proceedings in the Madras High Court to be conducted in Tamil, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr M. Karunanidhi, said. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that Section 348 of the Constitution dictates that proceedings in the Supreme Court and High Courts be conducted in English. But Sub-section 2 provides for State Governments to enact legislation with the President's assent to ensure the High Courts conduct the proceedings in the respective State language also. The Tamil Nadu Government will take appropriate steps for the High Court to conduct the proceedings in Tamil.
