The Hindu Business Line : SMEs urged to tap opportunities in non-destructive testing

Indian small and medium enterprises have a big opportunity waiting in the vast range of commercial applications of non-destructive testing (NDT). NDT is a valid method that tells you the health of the material without causing any damage to it.

An international exhibition and seminar showcasing the applications of this fast-growing NDT would be held in Hyderabad during December 7-9. The Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ISNDT) has lined up top speakers and companies to participate in the event.

NDT finds extensive use in petrochemical, oil and gas, fertiliser, power, aerospace, defence, atomic energy, railways and automobile industries. It has emerged as an alternative tool for engineers to ensure quality and reliability of the product that is manufactured.

Typical examples of NDT include preventing an aircraft from failing on its flight, saving both money and lives, leak of an oil or gas pipeline, an automobile breakdown, etc. X-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy, are typical examples of NDT in the medical field, according to ISNDT scientists.

Mr Prahlada, Chairman of the Organising Committee, who is also the Chief Controller (R&D) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, told newspersons that in terms of software, diagnostics, education and certification, India was on par with the best in the world in NDT. However, in hardware - design and manufacture of equipment, the country was lagging behind.

The SME sector should come forward and exploit the opportunities in the hardware, diagnostics and applications of this technology. With India launching itself into infrastructure development in a big way, the business opportunities are bound to be enormous.

On the pure technology front, NDT can help in intelligent processing of materials.
