The Tamil Nadu Government on Friday said that it has decided to place orders on five companies for purchase of 25-lakh colour television sets. At a price of Rs 2,740 a piece, the total cost works out to Rs 685 crore.

A Government press release said that a committee set up for the purpose, which met on Friday, noted that the lowest price quoted was by a company called Dickson Technologies Pvt Ltd. The company had quoted Rs 2,740 for each set.

Four of the other companies that responded to a Government tender said that they would not be able to match this price. Five others agreed. Accordingly, the committee decided to place orders on those five.

The order is to be split among the five companies as follows: Dickson Technologies 9 lakh, L B Electronics 2 lakh, Kitchen Appliances India 3 lakh, Videocon Communications 6 lakh, Airvision India Pvt Ltd 2 lakh, with a provision for an order of another 3 lakh if the company (Airvision India) could raise its production capacity in three months.
