`Film piracy still an issue'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 24

The entertainment industry loses up to Rs 1,700 crore in piracy annually, says the Motion Picture Association (MPA), which has conducted close to a 1,000 raids with law enforcement agencies across the country in the last two years.

MPA premiered its documentary `What's it to Me?: Creativity, Copyright and the People Who Care About Them (And Don't)' at the International Film Festival of India in Goa. The film talks to students in the three metros of Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore and to filmmakers and legal property rights experts to understand why piracy is not curtailed.

The organisation works worldwide to raise awareness against piracy. "We need to know what motivates people to go to the movies — and, equally important, what causes them to stay at home. We must understand their perceptions about the value of a movie and whether they recognise the ramifications of piracy," said Mr Mike Ellis, Senior Vice-President and Regional Director, Asia-Pacific, MPA. The association has conducted more than 10,500 raids and seized more than 34 million optical discs in Asia Pacific in 2005. "Indian students, as their peers in Japan, New Zealand, China and the United States believe that downloading copyrighted content without paying for it is wrong... but they do it anyway," he added.
