Railways Logistics - Infrastructure Foreign cos bid for Delhi Metro Mamuni Das
New Delhi , Nov. 24 A host of foreign companies has bid for supplying 400 electrical multiple units (EMUs) to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for its phase-II operations. They include Alstom, Bombardier, CAF, Siemens and a Mitsubishi-Rotem-Melco-BEML consortium. EMUs are passenger trains whose carriages have the ability to propel on their own. MRC had floated a global tender asking companies to bid for design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, training and transfer of technology of 400 EMUs. The winner is required to set up a local manufacturing base in India. Eyeing the growing mass rapid transit system (MRTS) market in India, most of the rolling stock companies are bullish on the Indian market. Demand for MRTS rolling stock is anticipated from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Mr Rajeev Jyoti, President, Bombardier, said, "We are very keen on the Indian MRTS market." When contacted, Alstom, Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) and Bombardier confirmed their participation. French firm Alstom has supplied metro trains to cities, including London, Paris, New York, Shanghai, Mexico, Warsaw and Caracas (Venezuela). Bombardier, a Canadian firm, has supplied metro vehicles to Berlin, Munich, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Helsinki, Lisbon (Portugal), London, Mexico, Stockholm, Toronto and Bucharest. CAF has designed and manufactured vehicles for Spanish cities, Finland, England, Portugal and Hong-Kong Lar Airport. Siemens has supplied metro coaches to Shanghai, Bangkok, Taipei and the UK. South Korean firm Rotem, Mitsubishi Corporation and Melco had supplied coaches to Delhi Metro for its phase-I operations. Rotem then even transferred technology to BEML to supply coaches to Delhi Metro Corporation.
