Chennai , Nov. 26

There are 16 dental colleges in Tamil Nadu — not enough for the State. The dentist to population ratio in rural areas is at 1:50,000.

"We are in need of more dental practitioners in rural areas," the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr M. Karunanidhi, said in his inaugural address to a workshop conducted by the Asia-Pacific Dental Federation, here on Friday.

A research carried out in the State Government Dental College showed that 66 per cent of the population of Tamil Nadu suffered from Dental Caries, 88 per cent from Gum Disease and 40 per cent from bite deformity, he said, adding that a number of districts in the State were prone to dental fluorosis.

Rural colleges

"Towards reducing shortages of dental doctors in rural areas my Government took a policy decision to encourage Dental Colleges in rural areas.

"So far, we have given permission to start ten new colleges to raise the number of dental health professionals in the State, Mr Karunanidhi told the gathering.

In order to distribute the workforce and to reach the rural population, the Tamil Nadu Government has also decided to appoint dental surgeons in all Taluk hospitals in Tamil Nadu, he said.
