The United Progressive Alliance Chairperson and Congress President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, on Monday called for an alliance between civil society, public sector and industry to bring about necessary social transformation.
"An alliance of the public sector and civil society is necessary for social transformation. Industry must be an integral part of such an alliance,'' Ms Gandhi said at the India Economic Summit 2006 here on Monday.
She said that the Government must develop the framework for institutionalising such an alliance.
Ms Gandhi highlighted that a bigger and more collective effort is required for social transformation, the primary responsibility of which lies with the Government.
The Congress President stressed the need for stepping up investments in education, health and nutrition. She also called for greater effort and sustained commitment from industry on various social initiatives.
She later presented the 2006 India Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship to Dr Vikram Akula, Founder and CEO of SKS Microfinance Private Ltd.
