Telecommunications Info-Tech - Regulatory Bodies & Rulings TRAI makes interconnection mandatory Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 27 Telecom subscribers of an operator such as Airtel can soon access services like astrology, toll free phone numbers offered by another operator, such as Hutch with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India making it mandatory for operators to interconnect with each other for Intelligent Network (IN) services. Until now IN services like tele voting and contests being offered by operators could be accessed by their respective subscribers only. In most developed countries, IN services are easily accessible. Any subscriber of any operator is able to access the IN services provided by any other provider. In contrast, in India subscribers are able to access the IN platform of their own service provider only. TRAI said that IN service is not a separate service, therefore, the regulation would ensure that specified innovative services made available through IN will not be restricted to the telecom service providers who have deployed the platform, but also be available to subscribers of other operators. The technical architecture and mutual revenue share among service providers would have to be mutually decided. The list includes services such as virtual calling cards for making long distance telephone calls and services that start with digits `1800', `1860', `901' and `1801' among others. "Consumers are today offered a number of innovative services made available through Intelligent Network deployed by telecom service providers in their network. Currently, these services can only be accessed by subscribers of a specific service provider ," TRAI said.
