Roadways States - Andhra Pradesh AP buses to sport new blue & white colours Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Nov. 27 The `Yerra bassu' (the red bus), which has been the mascot of the AP State Road Transport Corporation for years, will soon be a thing of the past. All the `red buses' of the utility would now sport blue and white colours. Not only that, they would have a `Conductor Ramanna' logo, reflecting the passenger-friendly behaviour of the bus staff. Of a fleet of 20,000 buses, red buses constitute more than 11,000, with city buses, metro and other services sporting other colours. The utility, which has been in the dock for mounting losses and employee unrest some time back, has embarked on a major image makeover as it enters the Platinum Jubilee year this year. Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister, has inaugurated the Platinum Jubilee (75th anniversary). Marking the event, he also unveiled the campaign `Palle Velugu' (the light of villages) by flagging off the first bus decked in blue and white. Besides introducing 100 green-friendly buses, the corporation would launch a new service, a grade higher than hi-tech segment and lower than the Garuda service, using `Terraplane' buses. Addressing a gathering later, Dr Reddy listed various measures taken by the Government to revive the fortunes of the corporation and advised the staff to increase occupancy rates. Mr V. Dinesh Reddy, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of RTC, said the change of colours of red buses would be taken up in phases.
