YSR wants statutory warning on beedis to go

Hyderabad , Nov. 27

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today hinted at seeking Centre's help in amending a legislation that makes display of health hazard mandatory on beedi packs.

"If need be, the State Government, in consultation with the Centre, may seek them to even pass an Ordinance that would help bring about the necessary changes with regard to display of the statutory health safety notice," he said at a press conference at the State Secretariat.

Speaking to newspersons, he said "the enactment passed by the NDA Government actually comes into effect on February 1, 2007. However, to ensure that the genuine concerns of beedi workers are addressed, we need to bring about changes in the existing law."

"There are over 3.5 crore beedi workers in the country and they fear that their profession would be threatened if the mandatory display is made on the cover of a beedi pack. This is a sensitive issue, and concerns not just workers in AP but all over the country. Hence, needs to be handled with sensitivity," he said. The matter has also been brought to the notice of the UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi.

The enactment, which would come into force early next year, also applies to cigarettes. The matter assumed importance during the ensuing by-elections in the State, with some political parties also making this a political issue.
