Concerned over the spread of HIV/AIDS in the State, the Andhra Pradesh Government is contemplating to make it mandatory for youths to undergo tests before they tie the knot.
The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has asked officials of the Health Ministry to study the issue. This would go a long way in checking the spread of the disease.
He also wanted them to conduct a State-level workshop, inviting all the stakeholders, to discuss the idea of mandatory tests and arrive at a consensus.
Chairing the first State-level committee on AIDS here on Monday, he asked the officials and other stakeholders to evolve a major programme to see to it that the newly born children were not affected.
Noticing the fact that there were no exclusive counselling and supportive centres for destitute adult AIDS patients, especially women patients, the Chief Minister asked Mr Ashok Kumar, Project Director of APSACS (AP State AIDS Control Society) to open such centres taking help from the NGOs. If need be, the Government would provide financial assistance.
`Be Bold' initiative
He also asked APSACS to launch the `Be Bold' campaign from next month to encourage people from of all walks of life to talk boldly to talk about the HIV/AIDS, to get tested.
Mr Ashok Kumar had briefed about the plan to ensure zero HIV positive child to be born in the State from 2007.
