MSD Pharma to set up base in Kolkata

MSD Pvt Ltd, a 100 per cent Indian subsidiary of the US-based $24 billion Merck Sharp & Dohme, arguably the single largest pharma company in the world, is now setting up shop in the eastern region, with Kolkata as the base, after establishments in New Delhi and Bangalore.

The company's India plan, according to Mr Anjan Kumar Das, Sales Manager, was to introduce five new products initially, covering MSD's niche areas of cardiovasculars, vaccines and anti-infectives and anti-fungals specially for critical care patients. Mr Das said the company spends nearly 10 per cent of its annual turnover on R&D. He said MSD was relocating its hospitals and Vaccines divisions to India and has planned to create a large facility in Gurgaon near Delhi. Some of the major R&D facilities of MSD are located in New Jersey, US; Brussels, and Budapest. He said MSD plans to create the necessary base in the first year of operations.
