Arecanut growers irked over gutkha ban

Aravindan

Kottayam , Nov. 28

Arecanut market continues to be inactive, according to Campco sources.

It is now procured from petty traders from Ketcheri and Amalanagar markets in Trissur. Small growers directly supply the product to Campco in little quantities, said Mr Ravindra Rao, Regional Manager Campco, Trissur.

As there is no demand at present, there is no alternative except to wait and watch the situation, he added.

The news of the ban on gutkha was a matter of concern for the market. The manufacturers who retreated from the scene in large numbers expedited the downtrend. In fact red variety is used for gutkha production.
