New Projects Due diligence on for JSW Steel's Bengal plant Our Bureau
Kolkata , Nov 28 Work on due diligence with regard to Sajjan Jindal Group company JSW Steel Ltd's proposed 10 million tonnes per annum capacity steel project in West Bengal has begun. The company is working on the finer points of the proposed memorandum of understanding that it hopes to sign with the West Bengal government in the months ahead. The project also envisages setting up a 900-1,000 MW power plant. According to Dr B.N. Singh, Joint Managing Director, and Mr Prashant Jain, Chief Executive Officer and Head Corporate Strategy, about 6,500-7,000 acres required for the project have been identified jointly with the West Bengal government at Salmona in West Midnapore district. Earlier, land for the proposed project had been identified at Guptamari, also in West Midnapore. However, its acquisition posed a problem owing to its proximity to the Kalaikunda Air Force base. After a meeting with Dr Sabyasachi Sen, Principal Secretary in West Bengal's Department of Industries, Mr Jain told newspersons that the Sajjan Jindal Group was "happy" with the progress of the proposed project. He said he did not foresee any problems pertaining to the acquisition and handover of land for the proposed steel plant. The site was chosen keeping in view raw material linkages and access to ports and the railway system. In the first phase, the proposed plant would be equipped to produce 3-5 million tonnes of steel. This would comprise both long and flat products, Mr Jain said.
