With about 31 IT Special Economic Zones cleared for Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad is poised to increase its current IT infrastructure from 15 million sq ft to about 60 million sq ft, thereby quadrupling it within three to four years.

Hyderabad has received clearance for a lion's share of the IT SEZs proposed across the country. This follows the State's effort to boost the related infrastructure of creating a Greenfield international airport, a 160-km expressway and ORR (outer ring road) with satellite townships dotting the road project.

The State Secretary for Information Technology and Communication (ITC), Mrs Ratna Prabha, said: "Growth in the IT sector was fascinating and it is difficult to understand the pace at which the sector has grown in the last few years. The size and magnitude of such a growth is huge and it is accelerating in the last few months with a series of applicants for IT SEZs."

Of the 80 odd SEZs that were approved by early November, 31 have been cleared for AP. Of them, 29 are proposed to come up in Hyderabad and two in Vizag, which is being developed as second major IT destination in the State.

The port city of Vizag too has witnessed significant interest from IT and BPO companies. While HSBC already has its presence there, Satyam is set to add a facility, Wipro, Infotech, Color Chips and about 25 more firms are in the process of firming up plans for their expansion to Vizag.

HOTEL COSTS SPIRAL

During a meeting where an IT company recently commenced its operations, a Director RPG group, Mr Pradipto M, engaged with several infrastructure projects, voiced his concern over spiralling costs of hotel room and the difficulty an executive faces when he lands in Hyderabad.

Asa globetrotter familiar with the hospitality industry, he found$ 300-a-day hotel room in Hyderabad too expensive. "A room that costs $ 100 or less is fine but it is difficult to get one at that rate," he added.

He urged the ITC Secretary to ensure that other related infrastructure including hotels and other facilities such as shared accommodation, which is often cheaper than hotel rooms and infrastructure related to IT sector and for their homes is created.
