Kochi Builders' meet to begin on Saturday

1,500 delegates expected

Kochi is all set to host the 22nd All India Builders Convention - BAI NATCON 2006 - organised by Builders Association of India (BAI) here from December 2-4 at the Le Meridien Convention Centre.

As many as 1,500 delegates are expected to participate in the three-day conference, which will be inaugurated by the Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Mr Vayalar Ravi.

Mr Ajit Gulabchand, CMD of Hindustan Construction Company Ltd, will deliver the keynote address. Mr Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Thomas Issac, State Minister for Finance, Mr T.U. Kuruvilla, State Minister for Public Works, Mr Premachandran, State Minister of Irrigation, will participate in the convention.

Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, Mr T.K. Ramachandran, Chairman of the Organising Committee, said that this was the first time the seminar was being organised in Kerala, which is on the threshold of major developmental activities particularly in the business capital of Kochi. A choice of various places of interest in the State has been provided.

The conventions are events in themselves with representation from the cross section of the construction industry focussing on exchange of ideas, new products, the latest in science and technology and issues relating to the construction industry. The theme of the convention is Infrastructure Development - Today's Challenge.

There will be paper presentations in PPP in infrastructure development, innovations in construction practices, IT in construction, civil engineering profession - problems and prospects, housing and civil infrastructure development India v/s developed countries etc.

According to Mr Ramachandran, BAI is the apex body of builders, contractors, manufacturers and dealers associated with the construction industry. It conducts biennial national conventions where members from 90 centres across the country converge to meet and interact with each other.

During the inaugural function, Mr E. Sreedharan, MD, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, will be presented `Suvarna Nirman Ratna Award' for excellence in engineering, construction and management of world-class projects.

The Build Expo 2006, a part of the convention, which sprawls over five days, will include categories such as property expo, building materials, finalising and interior products, construction equipment and machinery, safety and security systems.
