Caring for the elderly

This is with reference to "Declining joint families — Looming social security crisis," (Business Line, November 30).

The author has put forward good suggestions to meet the challenges of the `age quake.'

The population of the elderly is growing. Some families are thrown into crisis due to the escalating cost of medical treatment and lack of insurance.

More old-age homes will be necessary.

The government will have to bring special schemes for security of the elderly.

A Jacob Sahayam

Thiruvananthapuram
