Low volume on offer at Coonoor tea auctions

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Nov. 30

With the incessant rains obstructing harvest and factories complaining of shortage of firewood for fuel purposes, the arrivals of made tea for the auctions at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) have fallen.

For the 48th sale to take place this week, only 12.37 lakh kg have been catalogued. This is some 2.3 lakh kg lower than last week. Compared to the year's highest offer a fortnight ago, this volume is about 3 lakh kg lower.

Six-week low

This is the lowest volume of the last six weeks. "Looking at the trend, the volume might drop to pre-Diwali levels as we enter deep winter," Mr T. Rangaiah, President of Nilgiris Small Tea Growers' Association, told Business Line.

The pre-Diwali volume was around 9 lakh kg. But now, the leaf grades alone total this level. This time last year, the volume was 9.9 lakh kg.

Of the 12.37 lakh kg now on offer, leaf grades total 8.99 lakh kg and the dust grades, 3.38 lakh kg. Again, as much as 11.44 lakh kg belong to the CTC and only 0.93 lakh kg are orthodox.

The composition of orthodox is low in both the leaf and dust grades
