New Delhi , Nov. 30

The Indian PC market recorded a year-on-year growth of 24 per cent in the third quarter of 2006, with the number of shipments exceeding 1.4 million as per the IDC report. The growth in the overall PC shipment has been attributed mainly to the SMB (small and midsize businesses) and higher education segment, which contributed significantly to the growth of the notebook PC market. In the overall PC market, which includes both desktops and notebooks, the rankings remained unchanged with HP retaining the top slot with a market share of 21 per cent, followed by HCL at 12 per cent, and Lenovo at 9 per cent in terms of unit shipments.

"With the impact of Intel chip price cuts getting clearer, the SMB segment registered a strong double-digit year-on-year growth in PC shipments. The festive season promotions kept the growth momentum going for the consumer segment. These market trends were further provided a boost due to a spurt in the shipments of notebook PCs to the education segment in Q3 2006 vis-à-vis Q3 2005", said Mr Piyush Pushkal, Assistant Manager, PC Research, IDC India.

In the desktop PC segment, HP led the market in the July-September quarter, followed by HCL and Lenovo. In the consumer desktop PC market, HP retained the top slot followed by HCL and LG at second and third positions respectively. However, in the commercial desktop PC market, HP led the market followed by HCL and Lenovo. The notebook PC market registered a 79 per cent year-on-year growth during the quarter and in terms of total notebook PC shipments, HP reported the highest market share of 41 per cent.
