Roadways States - West Bengal Highways authority to invest Rs 10,000 crore in Bengal Our Bureau
Kolkata , Dec. 1
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will invest Rs 10,000 crore on the development of road infrastructure in West Bengal between now and 2009. It has already floated tenders worth Rs 42 crore for patchwork and repairs of highways in the State during the current fiscal. The Chairman of NHAI, Mr Pradeep Kumar, met West Bengal's PWD Minister, Mr Kshiti Goswami, on Friday and discussed plans for improvement of the road infrastructure in West Bengal. Speaking to newspersons later, Mr Goswami said NHAI would also upgrade a 150-km stretch of NH 34 between Mourgram and Kalickah in Malda district. It would also take up several road construction projects in the State in the next four years. A 5-km stretch between Joka and Khidderpore on NH 117A would be converted into a four-lane stretch. NHAI has also agreed to the State Government's demand to extend NH 41 from Haldia to Mecheda with a view to reducing traffic congestion on State highways. Mr Goswami said NHAI was also considering the construction of a second connecting road link between Sevoke in Siliguri district and the Nathula Pass on the Indo-China border.
