Infrastructure States - Karnataka Upgraded Bellary airport opened Our Bureau
Bellary , Dec. 1 The Civil Aviation Ministry is planning to set up an aviation grid with the cooperation of the States to improve the airport infrastructure and give a boost to economic development, the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Praful Patel, said. Talking to presspersons after formally inaugurating the upgraded airport built by Jindal South West at its steel plant site in Tornagal near here Friday, Mr Patel said "we are working with a vision of setting up a aviation grid by making all these airports functional with the help of the State Governments". Mr Patel said work had started in Mysore. The Mangalore airport had been upgraded already as an international airport with a flight taking off to Dubai recently. Hubli and Belgaum airports would also become operational with full fledged passenger capability and night landing capability. As for as the proposals for airports at Gulbarga and Hassan, they were awaiting memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the State Government. Mr Patel welcomed competition from private airlines and said there was no threat to the national carrier, Indian. He said the Tornagal airport would not only provide connectivity to the steel city of Karnataka, but would also give a boost to economic development and tourism. Mr Sajan Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal South West, said that tourism was a major foreign exchange earner and the tourist potential in the State and the district should be tapped by improving the infrastructure facilities. He underlined the need to improve the road connectivity to Hampi.
