Two software parks to offer some 25,000 jobs

New Delhi , Dec. 1

In a bid to make the IT industry in West Bengal at par with States such as Karnataka, the West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Ltd (WEBEL) would be forming joint venture with leading real estate players in the next two months to set up two IT parks in the State at an investment of about Rs 150 crore.

Further, the IT arm of the West Bengal Ministry is in talks with IT majors to set up operations in the State. The two Software Technology Parks of India (STPIs) that will be operational in the next 12-14 months would employ about 25,000-30,000 people in the Salt Lake region.

WEBEL also plans to lure investment for STPIs set up in Siliguri, Durgapur and Haldia mainly in the area of electronics hardware, design manufacturing and in the semi-conductor area.

With proximity to China, Taiwan and other such countries, the organisation is identifying partners in these countries so as to make the region a hub in electronics hardware.

During his visit to Delhi, Mr Debanjan Datta, Managing Director and CEO, WEBEL said, "Currently, West Bengal ranks below States such as Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi. However, we are seeking to take the State to the top position. The two IT parks are expected to generate about 30,000 jobs. Also, there is a 17-million sq. ft facility under construction that is expected to generate about 1.7 lakh jobs in the State. Apart from the big players who already have a presence and others who are showing keenness, we are also looking at mid-sized companies who are expanding their presence in the country."
