The Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, said on Friday that the Government would aim to check the rising inflation that is largely being driven by supply side constraints.
The country's Wholesale Price Index (WPI) moved up to 5.45 per cent for the week ended November 18, higher than the previous week's level of 5.29 per cent. The annual inflation rate was 4.27 per cent during the corresponding week of the previous year.
"We will aim to manage inflation. As I have said, it is largely driven by supply side constraints," Mr Chidambaram told presspersons here on Friday. He noted that the prices of primary products, especially pulses, still remained on the higher side.
The Finance Minister had on Thursday said that all macro-economic indicators were good, but the only worrying factor was inflation. "It is slightly higher than what we would have liked," he said, while expressing confidence that inflation could be tamed if there is better supply side management.
