Alliances & Joint Ventures Industry & Economy - Power States - Maharashtra Pact signed for tidal energy projects in Maharashtra Our Bureau
Mumbai , Dec. 1 Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) signed a memorandum of understanding with Sangli-based Apar Urja Ltd on Friday for tidal energy projects in Maharashtra. The tidal energy turbine for the first project will come up near Guhagar on Ratnagiri coast. The turbine is expected to generate 15-20 KW of power. MEDA is the state's nodal agency for development of non-conventional energy. Tidal power is the power generated by capturing the energy generated by moving water mass due to tides. Talking to Business Line, Mr Mahesh Zagade, Director General of MEDA, said Apar would develop the turbine on a pilot basis. MEDA has agreed to give Rs 40 lakh for developing the turbine. If the venture is successful, then MEDA will consider scaling up the pilot project. The initial experimental turbine of Apar has demonstrated that power can be generated 24 hrs a day, said Mr Zagade. The generated power would be used by the local villages in the area, he said. Studies have shown that 40,000 MW is the potential of tidal energy in the country, said MEDA in its Web site. In Maharashtra, coastal studies have indicated that there are some potential sites in Vengurla, Malvan, Redi, Pawas, Ratnagiri and Girye. Considering the total potential along the 720 km coast, the State can generat 500 MW for tidal power approximately, according to MEDA.
