SSI Info-Tech - Infrastructure Ten clusters spotted for IT implementation Our Bureau
Chennai , Dec. 2 The Union Ministry of Small Scale Industries has identified 10 industrial clusters for implementing information, communication and technology (ICT) among small and medium size enterprises. It is also working with Microsoft and Confederation of Indian Industry to identify the delivery channel for implementing ICT in the clusters, according to Mr Jawhar Sircar, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner. The 10 clusters are: Tirupur (textiles), Coimbatore (pumps and motors), Rajkot (machine tools), Pune (auto components), Ludhiana (bicycle components), Shantiniketan in West Bengal (leather goods), Delhi (ready-made garments), Jalandhar (drugs and pharmaceuticals), Ahmedabad and Hyderabad (electric fans), he said. According to Mr M. Raman, State Commissioner of Industries and Commerce, there are around five lakh registered and one lakh unregistered small-scale units in the State. He urged Mr Sircar for availability of bandwidth to SMEs in the industrial clusters at a lower cost. This would help the units to use Internet for electronic transactions, he said.
