Yangtze, busiest river

The volume of traffic moving along the Yangtze river in China is expected to reach nearly one billion tonnes in 2006, 15.1 per cent over that in 2005, according to a report in the People's Daily. The Yangtze thus has emerged as one of the world's busiest rivers with the largest cargo volume, the report said. The cargo throughput, particularly the trunk traffic, of the Yangtze waterway is believed to be 1.6 times the total volume of traffic handled by the Mississippi river in the US and 3.1 times that of the Rhine waterway in Europe.

The major items transported along the Yangtze include iron ore, coal and petroleum products. The seven provinces and two municipalities along the river generate more than 40 per cent of the country's economic aggregate, the report added.
