Kolkata , Dec. 3

Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, has launched two separate tour packages for Darjeeling and Gangtok. This is IRCTC's first such tour programme for the eastern region.

The duration of each package, according to Mr Vivek Srivastava, Group General Manager of IRCTC, will be three days and four nights and the cost will vary depending on the type of accommodation. The Exclusive Package, offering accommodation in a two-star hotel, will cost Rs 6,999 for each person, while the Premium Package, offering accommodation in a four-star hotel will cost Rs 8,999 for each person. The cost will cover 3AC train journey, dinner on-board, hotel accommodation, all meals, all transfers and all sight-seeings. Both the packages are available for Darjeeling and Gangtok. A special arrangement has been made with the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council for rafting in the Teesta river. Those opting for it have to pay separately. The first tour, both for Darjeeling and Gangtok, will start from December 22.

IRCTC would shortly introduce other tour packages for the Sunderbans (West Bengal), Araku Valley (Andhra Pradesh) and Puri-Chilika-Satpara (Orissa), he said.

"IRCTC being a Union Government undertaking guarantees full value for money, absence of any hidden cost and hassle-free arrangement and therefore total enjoyment to those opting for the packages," Mr Srivastava said.

The Food Plazas having proved to be popular, there were plans to introduce the same in several railway stations in eastern region. Right now there were 11 such plazas in the region, the biggest and the most successful one being at Howrah station. The Food Plaza at Sealdah station would be launched shortly and franchisee would be R.K. Associates, he added.
