Lastech Systems, a Chennai-based company, has launched www.tamilthedal.com, a site to enable Internet users use search engines such as Google for search in Tamil. Users can directly type the Tamil text to search using various keyboard layouts such as typewriter, Phoenetic, Tamil-99 and Romanised.

The Java-based Web site uses Unicode standard and allows the user to type in Tamil without the need to download the fonts or software to the user's system. The Tamil text to search can be typed by using the `onscreen keyboard' layout, says a company press release. For users who are not familiar with the Tamil keyboard layouts, the Web site provides a transliteration facility. For example, user has to type `thamiz' for Tamil, according to the release.
