UK invites Indian students

Visakhapatnam , Dec. 3

The British Council wants to forge partnerships between schools in India, especially growing cities such as Visakhapatnam, and the UK to facilitate a greater number of students from India to study in Britain.

The Deputy Director of British Council, Chennai, Mr Kartar Singh, said here on Friday that currently 19,000 or so were going to the UK every year for education and the number is estimated to go up to 26,000 by 2010, according to a study on global student mobility. "Indian students prefer the UK, as the courses are of shorter duration, better quality and the costs are competitive," he said.

A press release says that health care for students is subsidised or free under national health scheme and several scholarships are also offered on merit.

Tuition fees

According to the release, studying in the UK involves two kinds of costs - tuition fees and living costs. For arts subjects, the average tuition fee for a year is in the range of £6,250-7,650.

For MBA, it is in the range of £6,000- 20,000. For science courses, it is £6,500-9,700 and for clinical courses £6,960-18,000. The living costs on the aggregate are in the range of £7,000-8,000 a year.

The British Council organised a number of seminars and other events here for the past three days to make local people aware of the educational opportunities in Britain.
