Tirupur dyers fast to seek more time on `reverse osmosis'

Call for formation of panel on effluent discharge norms

Bid to highlight `difficult' days faced by the industry in the wake of the HC's ruling on `reverse osmosis.

Coimbatore , Dec. 4

Members of dyeing and bleaching units in Tirupur including those employed in allied industries went on a day's hunger strike today in the knitwear town to highlight what they called the "difficult" days faced by the dyeing industry in the wake of the High Court's ruling on implementation of the `reverse osmosis' treatment system to contain effluent discharge.

The members who sat on a one-day fast in the town were demanding further extension of time for implementing the `reverse osmosis' system by the 700-odd dyeing and bleaching units as stipulated by the expert panel formed by the Madras High Court to monitor the status of the Tirupur dyeing industry in adhering to the `0' effluent discharge norms. The fasting members also called for formation of a committee by the State Government to go into the ground level reality in implementing the `0' discharge norms and the funds needed to set up for the `reverse osmosis' system by all the dyeing houses.

The Tirupur dyers also shut their shops today in support of the hunger strike.

The agitation comes in the wake of the six months deadline fixed for implementing the `0'discharge norm coming to an end with this month. It is understood that the units which failed to implement the `reverse osmosis' plants are likely to come under the adverse notice of the Court and may be faced with the burden of bearing `penal' cost on every litre of effluent discharged by them. Of the estimated 720 dyeing and bleaching units, only 19 units are believed to have completed and commissioned the `reverse' osmosis plants and another 50 units are in the process of installing the `0'discharge facilities.
