IIM-A to seek European accreditation

Our Bureau

The B-school may apply for it later this month

Ahmedabad , Dec. 4

The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has decided to seek the famed EQUIS accreditation this month, its Director, Dr Bakul Dholakia, said here on Monday.

The Policy and Perspectives Committee of IIM-A had discussed the issue last month and the premier business school is likely to put in application later this month to the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), which grants the EQUIS accreditation. The process of accreditation may take 12 to 18 months and IIM-A may be granted accreditation for three to five years, he told a news conference here this evening.

Benchmarking

He said the EQUIS accreditation is expected to give the IIM-A a lot of insight and inputs, valuable suggestions. "We are benchmarking ourselves and we aspire to become a leading global business school.

It will enhance the IIM-A global positioning and improve our ability to attract European executives for our one-year programmes. Besides, it would strengthen our ability for forging international alliances and create more opportunities for our students."

Mr Julio Urgel, Director, EQUIS, EFMD, who was also present, said the body had 600 members across 65 countries but had granted accreditation to only 97 business schools.

He said he had interacted with about 10 top business schools across India during his present tour and was hopeful that about five of these, not all IIMs, merited accreditation.

Originally, started as an association of European business schools, the accreditation agency EFMD's EQUIS tag has emerged important for enhancing excellence in management development in Europe and world wide, he added.
