Kochi , Dec. 5 Coir Board is considering introduction of a health insurance scheme for coir workers, Mr A.C. Jose, Chairman of the Board, has said. Speaking at a function organised as part of handing over the cheque to Oriental Insurance Company towards the premium amount for the next one year for personal accident insurance scheme, Mr Jose said that the Board has been implementing the Coir Workers' Personal Accident Insurance Scheme since 1998-99 covering four lakhcoir workers in the country without any premium being collected from the workers. Till 2005-06, 179 claims involving a compensation of Rs 44.63 lakh have been settled by the Board through the insurance companies, he said. Under the scheme, persons engaged in any work connected with various processes in coir industry, direct or indirect wage earners from the employer, dealers or producers of coir products, persons employed by or through a contractor or through an agent, self-employed persons who dependmainly on coir industry for their livelihood will be treated as coir workers for entitlement of benefit. Insurance cover will be given for accidental death and disability. The policy will provide compensation to the disabled coir workers and to legal heirs of the deceased for disability or death. In the event of death or permanent total disability, the compensation isRs 50,000. It will be Rs 25,000 for permanent partial disability. The scope of the scheme has been widened to include compensation for damage to or loss of fingers in accidents.
