Kerala plans Rs 1,000-cr investment in tourism

The Government will also announce a policy on health tourism shortly and conduct roadshows in Sri Lanka and Male to promote medical tourism.

The State Government has initiated steps to realise investments to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore in the tourism sector.
These include a `Dream City' in Kozhikode, international convention centre at Aakkulam near here and Kerala House at Mumbai, the Tourism Minister, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said here on Tuesday.
The Government had submitted 215 projects to the Centre for approval, while work had commenced on 111 projects, the Minister said.
The tourism centres in the State would be connected by road, rail, air and waterways. The Government is going ahead with the necessary measures to implement the projects suggested by the President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he said.
The Government is laying stress on tourism projects that reflect the State's ecological uniqueness and cultural heritage. It will frame a new `heritage policy' aimed at preserving and encouraging the State's traditional arts.
The Government will also announce a policy on health tourism shortly in view of the immense potential in the area. It would conduct roadshows in Sri Lanka and Male to promote medical tourism, the Minister said.
PVT PARTICIPATION
He said the private sector has an important role to play in tourism development and the Government would extend all assistance to private entrepreneurs to start projects. Also, new tourism centres would be developed with the help of local self-governments.
The Government's ultimate objective is integrated development of the State through maximum utilisation of manpower resources and proper planning of projects, he said.
