Research & Development AstraZeneca poster drive on new TB drug Our Bureau
Bangalore , Dec. 5 Pharmaceutical major AstraZeneca is driving home its message on a new tuberculosis cure through 12 posters. The posters cover the gamut of discovery of a tuberculosis drug and have been presented by young scientists at an international symposium on tuberculosis research held in New Delhi. The move is meant to raise awareness within the research community about finding an effective cure for the disease that kills millions of people in developing countries, according to a company release. AstraZeneca is also a sponsor of the conference being hosted during December 4-6. Dr T.S. Balganesh, Vice-President, Discovery, AstraZeneca Bangalore, said, "AstraZeneca has specially chosen young researchers who are drivers of the research to present each of the posters. Tuberculosis is one of India's biggest public health concerns. India has the largest number of TB cases in the world, currently standing at 16 million, more than double that of China." AstraZeneca has invested over $40 million in its TB drug research programme, in an effort to find an effective alternative to the 40-year-old combination therapy. Dr Balganesh heads the lead India centre, the Avishkar Discovery Research Centre of Excellence at Bangalore. Its 90-plus scientists work in collaboration with AstraZeneca's infection research centre in Boston.
