Outlook `Manufacturing sector offers bright scope' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Dec 6 IT companies can vie for a share of the $100-billion opportunity in the IT-intensive product space, with manufacturing companies worldwide trying to embed IT solutions in their products to enhance utility. Speaking at the two-day Global Logistics Summit on Wednesday, Mr Subu D. Subramanian, Director and Senior Vice-President (Manufacturing and Automotive) of Satyam Computer Services, gave a bird's-eye view of product innovations in a variety of sectors that increasingly use IT. He spoke on `Leveraging IT for global manufacturing' in the concluding session on `Can India become a global manufacturing hub?' The approximate cost of electronics in luxury automobiles is 23 per cent of product cost. This is likely to go up to 50 per cent 2010. Also, nearly 80 per cent of innovations in automobiles came from electronics, he said. Ms Mallika Srinivasan, Director of TAFE, who chaired the session, said that the country has of late been registering successes in the manufacturing sector. But these "ripples" (isolated successes in attracting investments) need to be converted into "waves." Mr Vineet Agarwal, Executive Director of TCI, spoke about infrastructural bottlenecks in the sectors of roads, ports and aviation.
