Compensation hiked to Rs 1,170 cr; 750 families to benefit

In cases where people have lost land due to acquisition by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority, developed plots equivalent to 75 per cent of the lost land will be offered.

Hyderabad , Dec 6

The State Cabinet today approved a compensation package for oustees of the land for the ambitious Rs 5,000-crore outer ring road project, which would include higher cash amounts.

The package would mean a cash compensation of minimum of Rs 8 lakh per acre and if a family loses up to 80 per cent of the land, they would get a well-developed plot of land of 400 sq yards in place of one acre of land acquired. However, this is subject to a ceiling of 1,200 sq yards.

Speaking to newspersons after the Cabinet meeting, Information Minister Mr Mohammed Ali Shabbir said that the decision was based on a report submitted by a Cabinet Sub-committee headed by Finance Minister Mr K. Rosaiah.

This move follows series of protests and court litigations by the oustees, who have been demanding adequate compensation for the land acquired from them. According to estimates, the compensation to 750 families affected due to acquisition of about 5,500 acres acquired in 68 villages spread across the twin cities has been increased to Rs 1,170 crore, reflecting a hike of Rs 1,000 crore.

For the 440 acres acquired in 16 villages during phase I of the project, spread over 24 km, Rs 80 crore has been set aside. The project is slated to be ready by 2009.

In instances where people have lost land due to acquisition process of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority, developed plots equivalent to 75 per cent of the land lost will be offered, subject to a maximum of 900 sq yards. If the family insists on cash compensation, they will be eligible for twice the current rate.

In addition, those who lose assigned lands will get 90 per cent cash or land for land as compensation, whichever is applicable.

The package will mean ex gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh per acre of encroached land. Those who lose house will get a plot of 250 sq yards and house sites equivalent to the land.

Schools, orphanages and religious structures among others affected would also be compensated adequately.

Project Director Mr Piyush Kumar said that about 700 acres over 10 villages is being acquired at a cost of Rs 210 crore to provide compensation for the oustees.

In other decisions, the Cabinet approved creation of six marine police stations and relaxation of building and floor space index norms for the three-star Jubilee Hills Resorts Ltd in Hyderabad.
