Corporates' role in development activity stressed

Tata Steel receives LIBA award

Chennai , Dec. 7

Corporates should come forward and involve themselves in development activity such as upkeep of roads, community development, healthcare and education in rural areas, said Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Addressing a meeting here where Tata Steel Ltd received the `Mother Teresa Award for Corporate Citizen 2005' at the Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), he said corporate houses should be committed towards uplifting the disadvantaged sections of society. India's competence in science and technology, information technology and education must be bound with social progress.

According to the citation, Tata Steel was conferred the award for its adherence to quality and productivity, contribution to education, social and scientific research, environment protection initiatives and programmes promoting socio-economic empowerment of the poor and disadvantaged sections of society.

Dr S. Asokan, Chief of Titania Business Unit, Tata Steel, received the award on behalf of the company.

Tata Steel was chosen for the award from among other companies such as Cognizant Technology Solutions, National Thermal Power Corporation, Pricol India Ltd and Satyam Computer Services Ltd.

Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), Loyola College, Chennai, instituted this award for Corporate Citizen in 1998 to uphold to management students, the corporate world and the public a business enterprise as a role model for its involvement in programmes of social responsibility.

A committee headed by Mr N. Vittal, I.A.S. (Retd), former Central Vigilance Commissioner, evaluated the companies.

Previous recipients of the award are Titan Industries, Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Indian Oil Corporation, Shriram Investments Ltd, Polaris Ltd and TVS Motor Company.
