UAE firm to use Coir Board tech for producing coco lawn

Our Bureau

Kochi , Dec. 7

The technology developed by the Central Coir Research Institute, Alappuzha, for producing Coco Lawn (readymade lawn) is getting attention overseas as a UAE-based company has evinced interest in utilising this technology through National Research Development Corporation (NRDC).

A memorandum of understanding in this regard has been signed between Mr Somanath Gosh, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, on behalf of NRDC, and Mr T.P. Abubacker Haji, Chairman, Madh Mak International Real Estate LLC, Sharjah. The technology has been transferred to the UAE firm on payment of $22,000.

Using this technology, Coco Lawn can be produced on a soil-less, pesticide-free and weed-free medium. This lush green lawn, which can be rolled, cut into desired shape and applied instantaneously, can be transported easily. This invention is first of its kind to use 100 per cent natural coir materials such as coir netting, coir fibre, coir pith and Coir Pith Organic Manure (C-Pom) and natural grass.

Mr A.C. Jose, Chairman, Coir Board, pointed out that this is the second occasion that a foreign company has come forward to purchase a technology developed by Coir Board. In August, a Kuwait-based company purchased the technology developed by the Board for converting coir pith into organic manure.
