Close to finalising plans with AP Govt for special economic zone

Hyderabad , Dec. 8

Technology services provider Cognizant on Friday announced plans to invest about $30 million (about Rs 140 crore) to expand its infrastructure here. It initially plans to create a facility to host about 5,000 employees.

The project envisages creation of its own campus in a nine-acre site. The company is also close to finalising plans with the State Government for a special economic zone (SEZ) project. The President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, said: "As we plan next phase of growth, we are focused on building the scale to address the needs of our businesses around the world. Building larger Cognizant's own facilities in India is a key part of our strategy."

Earlier this year, the company had hinted at a larger programme to spend over $200 million by the end of 2008 to build new fully owned techno-campuses in Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune that would have capability to host about 30,000 employees.

Hyderabad operations

The Vice-President and Head of Hyderabad Operations, Mr Shankar Srinivasan, said: "We have far exceeded our original plans in Hyderabad over last four years. What started with 200 people has now grown to about 2,000."

The company handles verticals of financial services, healthcare, information and media and entertainment and also hosts a Media Lab that works on complex issues relating to Digital Rights Management.
