MADE IN INDIA: The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Mr. Dayanidhi Maran, and Mr Alain Dutheil, Chief Operating Officer, ST Microelectronics, at the launch of ST5107 chip in the Capital on Friday. - Kamal Narang
New Delhi , Dec 8 European semiconductor company STMicroelectronics on Friday announced that it would increase its headcount in the country to 3,000 from 1,700 currently. It would also be investing $20-30 million in India for expansion. In India, STMicroelectronics has design centres at Bangalore and Greater Noida. The headcount increase, however, would be at the Noida centre. India is its largest design centre outside Europe. Mr Alain Dutheil, CEO and Vice-Chairman, Corporate Executive Committee, said: "We already have a plant in Italy and have a commitment in China too. So, before we think of any new manufacturing facility, we need to fulfill the existing capacity at these two places." The company has launched chips designed in India for set-top boxes and for sale in global markets. Among the top 25 chip companies, as many as 18 have already set up chip design centres in the country. With demand forecast at 11.8 million households by 2010 for set-top boxes and with the move to have smart cards for all citizens, the semiconductor industry is estimated to reach $15 billion by 2015, said Mr Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, on the occasion.
