New Delhi , Dec. 8

A regulatory body for medical devices and an Indian Institute of Diagnostics is on the cards.

"The regulatory framework for medical devices is ready and we will be submitting it to the Ministry of Health soon. Hopefully it will be passed in Parliament in a couple of sessions," said the Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Kapil Sibal, while inaugurating a conference here on Medical Electronics organised by industry chamber FICCI.

The Department of Science and Technology has worked on a draft legislation that will be forwarded to the Ministry of Health.

Mr Sibal hoped such a move would encourage international companies to consider manufacturing and developing medical devices in India.

Mr Sibal said providing affordable healthcare should be the most important criteria for both the Government and medical device manufacturers in the country.

In this regard, the Minister announced that 15 primary health centres would be connected via satellite to diagnostic centres and medical experts in larger cities.

This would entail an investment of Rs 10 lakh each.

Mr Sibal also called on the representatives of major medical devices makers such as Siemens, Philips Electronics and Texas Instruments to leverage the highly trained human resource pool of the country to use software developed here for embedded solutions. The Department of Science and Technology has entered into an agreement with Finland to establish the Indian Institute of Diagnostics.
