New Delhi, Dec. 8

ESPN Star Sports has acquired the television rights for the UEFA European Football Championships to be held in 2008. The new development, which follows the acquisition of three-year telecast rights of the English Premier League, strengthens their football offering considerably, says the broadcaster who brought the World Cup to India. "Soccer has been an eye opener. Take the World Cup, it broke all viewership records which were higher than that of one-day internationals," Mr R.C. Venkateish, Managing Director, ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd.

Sixteen national teams will play each other in Austria and Switzerland in June 2008. The live television broadcast and Internet rights are for the subcontinent, and the broadcaster will air all 31 matches. It will also produce exclusive pre, half time and post game programmes for the telecast. "We have expanded the football-watching audience in India through concentrated marketing efforts and programming initiatives such as the introduction of Hindi commentary," said Mr Jamie Davis, Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports, in a statement released by the company.
