SSI Small sector urged to tap opportunities in non-destructive tech Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Dec. 9 Indian companies have been successful in producing 80 per cent of consumable and small equipment, needed in the rapidly growing field of non-destructive evaluation (NDE). They, however, need to get their act together to get into manufacturing. Stating this, Mr Prahlada, Chief Controller (R&D), Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), said more than 70 industries have entered into NDE, which has wide ranging applications. Interestingly, just four multinationals together account for over Rs 1,000 crore business in the country. This shows the potential that NDE techniques, which include the use of X-rays, ultrasound, laser, computer tomography etc., have in the industry, defence and healthcare sectors. Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of the NDE-2006, national seminar and exhibition, Mr Prahlada said automotive, aerospace, infrastructure, processing, strategic sectors, were throwing up huge demand for NDE. The small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will have a big opportunity to tap. The President of the Indian Society for Non-Destructive Technology, Mr Sanklecha, said in addition to the 3-day exhibition, special tutorials and sessions have been organised to encourage SMEs to exploit the opportunities and manufacture low-cost products. Earlier, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, while inaugurating the meeting said NDE was being used in the massive irrigation projects taken up by the State, which was being looked upon as a role model by the rest of the country. Dr Reddy said it was interesting that the technology was being used in combating terrorism through thermal imaging technology and nanosciences. The Chief Minister also presented awards in various categories to scientists and industry representatives on the occasion. About 90 Indian and multinational companies were taking part in the exhibition, showcasing various equipment and products related to NDE. In the parallel seminar over 160 scientific papers were being presented, said Mr J.R. Joshi, Convenor, in his presentation.
