Rs 45 crore to be invested on a 300-tpd rice mill to be set up with Swiss technology.

Kolkata , Dec. 10

The Rs 700-crore turnover PLG Group, which has interests in plastics, chemicals and agro-products and food processing, has firmed up plans to invest Rs 170 crore in West Bengal in the next one year.

Of this, Rs 80 crore will be invested in a 400-tonnes-per-day (tpd) edible oil refinery unit being set up at Haldia under the banner of group company PLG Agrotech Ltd.

An amount of Rs 45 crore will be invested in augmenting the capacity of PLG Flour Mills Ltd to 600 tpd from 300 tpd. The group will invest another Rs 45 crore on a 300-tpd rice mill being set up with Swiss technology.

According to Mr Pramod Goel, Managing Director of the group, the proposed edible oil refinery in Haldia would be operational by June 2007.

The unit, which would comprise a 120-tpd seed crushing unit and a 250 tpd refined oil packing unit, would produce 400 tpd of refined soyabean, sunflower, rice bran and mustard and groundnut oils.

They would be retailed under the PLG Khushbu brand in polypacks and consumer packs.

According to him, eastern India has four organised players in edible oils manufacturing.

Together, they have a capacity to produce 3,000 tpd of edible oils, refined oils and fats.

"The demand for edible oils, refined oils and fats in eastern India is 30 per cent more than what is manufactured here. The North-Eastern States alone account for a consumption of 1,000 tpd. Our products will help bridge the demand-supply gap."

Mr Goel also said that the Rs 200-crore turnover PLG Flour Mills Ltd has a 300 tpd flour mill in Howrah district of West Bengal. Its capacity is being augmented to 600 tpd with the addition of a 300-tpd unit being set up with Swiss technology. Plans have been firmed up to launch wheat and flour in consumer packs under the PLG Puja brand in January 2007.

A 300-tpd rice mill is being set up at the border of Bardhaman and Midnapore districts at an investment of Rs 45 crore, Mr Goel added.
