Hyderabad , Dec. 10 Gift-a-car scheme for NRIs has become a hit with over 14,000 enquires. Interestingly, Karimnagar, which has good number of NRIs in West Asia and the US, tops with a huge number of enquiries. The gifting option for NRIs has been broadened and now they can gift a car by making all the bookings online. For example, an Indian working in Indonesia wanted a car delivered to his wife on their wedding anniversary. In 48 hours all the transactions were completed online and the vehicle was handed over to the lady. There is a potential of selling about 400-500 cars a month this way.
Good response
`Dil Se', the scheme designed by the country's largest carmaker Maruti, was slow off the block, since its launch a few months ago. But as awareness about the scheme has spread, it appears that the response would only get better. The scheme targets NRIs who would want to give back something to their family. The Chief General Manager, Maruti Udyog Ltd, Mr Arun Malhotra, said that the potential for car sales is just being unlocked as new segments, new regions and new channels are getting opened. Yet the car sales in comparison to some of the countries in the region is still way behind. Given the current economy growth and increasing youth population, the sales could go up significantly, he said. This is one reason Maruti is targeting new segments such as teachers, PSU employees and fleet operators. Recently, it sold over 250 cars to fleet operators in Delhi, Mr Malhotra added.
Finance options
As a part of the company's initiatives, Maruti is looking at tying up with more banks and financial services providers for car loans in rural areas, where people want finance options. These include, SBI, PNB, M&M Finance, Magma and Cholamandalam. Maruti officials were in Hyderabad to launch their latest offering Zen Estilo and said that they expect to roll out their diesel variant of Swift by the end of this fiscal.
