Railways Industry & Economy - Infrastructure States - Andhra Pradesh Rail corridor between Begumpet, Shamshabad airports okayed Our Bureau
Modelled on the lines of the rail corridor in Hong Kong and London, the project could bring down the average travel time from 90 minutes to 22 minutes.
Hyderabad , Dec. 10 A rail corridor, stretching 30 km to connect the Begumpet airport in the heart of Hyderabad to the upcoming international airport in Shamshabad, with estimated investments of Rs 2,500 crore has crossed the proposal stage. The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara reddy, has okayed the project, which if implemented would considerably ease traffic congestions and facilitate easy transport for the travellers as well as people of Hyderabad. The dedicated airport rail link would run via the business localities such as hitech city and the upcoming outer ring road (ORR). The Chief Minister was given a presentation on the project by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority, Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, the GMR Consortia, which is implementing the International Airport project. The project would have to be implemented by the Centre and hence, the State Government has to only give right of way along the ORR. Hence, there would not be any financial burden for the State. The proposed project would utilise the assets of the existing Begumpet airport, according to a press release from the Chief Minister's Office. Modelled on the lines of the rail corridor in Hong Kong and London, the project could bring down the average travel time from 90 minutes to 22 minutes. It would also provide connectivity to the Hardware Park, Apparel Prak, FabCity, SEZs and a slew of other ambitious projects that the State Government has initiated. Preliminary studies show that the International airport would cater to over 12 million passengers per annum and an equal number into `receiving and sending off.' Similarly, the ridership of over 2.6 million to 2.9 million passenger trips per annum by airport passengers has been projected.
