ADAPT sets up arm in Kolkata

Ambar Singh Roy

Prompted by growing investments in infrastructure

Kolkata , Dec. 11

The Silicon Valley-based ADAPT Corp — a global player in the specialised domain of structural engineering software, services and consultancy — has opened its wholly owned subsidiary in Kolkata (first outside the US). The growing investments in road infrastructure, bridges and buildings in India have been compelling for the post-tensioning design company to set up shop here.

According to Dr Bijan O. Aalami, Founder & CEO of ADAPT Corp, the company has generated business in India on offshore model for the last 15 years. It has provided inputs and consultancy for several bridges and structures that have been built over the years. However, with the growth in the infrastructure and construction sectors, both housing and office space, the time is just ripe to seek a presence here.

"While the US office will cater to markets in the US and Europe, the Indian arm will address the infrastructure needs of the region. The Indian subsidiary, named ADAPT International Pvt Ltd, will develop and service businesses in the West Asia, Africa, South East Asia and the Asia Pacific," Mr Aalami said.

The company has six products on offer. While ADAPT ABI is a product for design of bridges, the ADAPT Builder suite of five products is meant for application in building construction, be it domestic dwelling units, office space, shopping malls, parking lots, etc.

According to Mr Suranjan Bhanja, CEO of the Indian subsidiary, the Indian subsidiary would concentrate on marketing and R&D. In the days ahead, an India development centre would be set up here in Kolkata. Dr Aalami said that ADAPT Corp has a turnover of $3 million at present. This was expected to go up to $10 million within the next five years. "Of this, 30 per cent will come from this region with India accounting for half of that," he said.
